Brief History of the Organization

Kalyan Sangha was born on the plain land, in Haripal of Hooghly district. Social worker and famous doctor Ashutosh Das came back to his native place Haripal after leaving government service. Hisaim was to serve the village and develop a village community following Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology. The organization that he formed was named Kalyan Sangha. Two other people, Sri Satish Chandra Sengupta and Sri Bijoy Kumar Bhattacharya came forward to help Dr. Das. Atthattime, it was a shelter for the sick and wounded freedom fighters. Later, in 1927 Kalyan Sangha shifted base to Chandra village of Bankura district. When the nation was experiencing freedom struggle, Kalyan Sangha emerged as an Ashram on the lap of the beautiful Shushunia Hill in Bankura, under the guidance of Sri Bijoy Kumar Bhattacharya and Sri Prafulla Chandra Sen. The local zamindar gave away six bighas of land for the establishment of the Ashram. This place became a branch of the Kalyan Sangha of Hooghly. Freedom fighter Sri Sanat Kumar Bhattacharya and his co-worker Kalidas Banerjee took charge of this branch. Chandra was a TNaad (arid) region devoid of any school, doctor or shops. The area was gradually transformed into fertile cultivable land; a small school wasstarted; the local village people started to take interest in the project.

In 1970, a children school, Sanat Kumar Shishu Bidyalaya was established at Kalyan Sangha, with the help of Bijoy Kumar and Smt. Sadhana Bhattacharya. A seven-member committee was formed where Bijoy Kumar was named the president and Sadhana Bhattacharya became the secretary. Since the social welfare department asked to register the organization to avail their fund, Kalyan Sangha became a registered body in 1971. The Registration No. was S/10764 of1970-71.

Sri Bijoy Kumar Bhattacharya, Smt. Sadhana Bhattacharya and the next president Sri Ramlochan Mukhopadhyay protected the organization in many hard times that Kalyan Sangha faced. After their death, this organization is still working towards its goal of maintaining its community ties, educating and rearing children. The blessings of the people who took care of the organization previously and the love and encouragement of the people of the local village are the two most precious resources of KalyanSangha.

Kalyan Sangha is not a religious or political organization and has no such affiliation.
